Management Career Options

What is Management?

Those with careers in management make decisions and direct resources that may include strategy, operations, recruiting, training and development, dispute resolution and other human resource issues. Careers in management stretch across many industries, including nonprofits, government agencies and the private sector.

What can I do with a major in management?

Managers require the ability to adapt to a fast-paced, constantly changing business environment that can include local, national and international business issues, and which may stretch across any sector or industry.

Managers make decisions and direct resources within business functions that may include strategy, operations, recruiting, training and development, dispute resolution and other human resource issues.

Management-level positions are projected to grow at an average rate in most areas of the profession. Areas of growth include managers and specialists who can provide human resource support for new companies. Students graduating with a major in management and who have previous internship experience in the field should have better job opportunities.

Guide to internships and full-time employment

Management or Leadership Programs (MDP/LDP)

Many Leadership Development Programs are not intended to build several management skills, but aim to develop high-level managers with significant experience within a single function. MDP/LDP programs can be found in multiple industries. Most of the development programs are rotational in nature, lasting from one to three years and can encompass several rotations of varying lengths. The rotations are designed to provide exposure to different functional and/or business units within the firm and to provide opportunities to build your transferable and functional skills. MDP/LDP is a concentrated effort to develop the talent needed to continue to meet the leadership demands of the organization.

Career fair

Career fairs are held each year for all business school students and alumni. Take advantage of this opportunity to meet with employers for internships, co-op positions and full-time employment. Internships

Internships occur during the fall, winter and summer months. Students apply for internships throughout the year.
Recruiting for full-time employment typically occurs during the semester prior to a position's expected start date.
