Meet The Butlers

As an associate professor of global supply chain management in the School of Business Administration, Tim Butler knows the value of a good education. When he and his wife Beverly lost their daughter, Becky, to a rare lung disease in 2011, they sought to honor her memory and support other students at the business school where she had been pursuing her bachelor's degree. Through establishing the Rebecca Joy Butler Memorial Endowed Scholarship for students with Becky's zest for life, love for others, and potential for leadership, Becky will always be remembered.
The Rebecca Joy Butler Memorial Endowed Scholarship supports bright and promising WSU business students like Becky, who are involved on and around campus. "Detroit is a bustling, emerging city, Wayne State provides so many opportunities for people in the Southeast Michigan area," Tim said.
An active member of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority, Becky "was happy with the vibe" in Midtown, according to Beverly. She recalls her daughter always introducing her and Tim to new restaurants and things to do. Becky cherished life and lived every minute to its fullest.
Becky passed away while waiting for a lung transplant. Tim and Beverly, alongside the Alpha Gamma Delta sisters, worked to raise awareness across Wayne State's campus about the desperate need for organ donors by recruiting students, staff and faculty to join the donor registry. With their combined efforts, Wayne State University won the 2012 Michigan Gift of Life Campus Challenge with over 1,100 individuals signing up.
