Business school offering essential leadership course: Open to all WSU graduate students for fall 2014

A transformative leadership training class offered by WSU’s School of Business Administration is now open to all Wayne State University graduate students. In addition to business students, the course will be especially beneficial to those studying health care, law or engineering.

The course, titled Leading in Organizations (MGT 7816), uses state-of-the-art leader development techniques and processes created by the Center for Creative Leadership, Korn Ferry and Lominger International, providing students with the means to achieve their targeted leadership goals.

"Students really shouldn’t think of this as a course," says Paul Reagan, the course leader and a senior lecturer in WSU’s Department of Management. "It’s more of a professional development experience focusing on them, where they are in their career, and where they want to go. It’s not boilerplate – it’s a very personal experience for each student."

The course engages students in personal and professional development in an academic setting. Developed by Reagan as an experiential learning course, students interact with peers, course teammates and professional colleagues to:

  • Assess their current leaderships competencies
  • Broaden their understanding and application of leadership
  • Create a two-year professional development plan
  • Learn how to use implement alternative strategies to strengthen leadership skills

"It’s not just for management majors, as the knowledge gained through these exercises is highly applicable to graduate students from all disciplines, especially those who are studying health care, law or engineering and who aspire toward leadership positions within their field," Reagan says.

MGT 7816 will be offered this fall at the university’s Oakland Center on Wednesday evenings from 6-8:45 p.m.
