WSU to launch new certificate program in info systems management

Responding to the high demand for IT professionals in Metro Detroit and beyond, the Wayne State University School of Business Administration is now accepting applications for its new and entirely online Post-Bachelor Certificate in Information Systems Management (PBC in ISM) program. The first class of students will begin the program in Fall 2014.

The only certificate program of its kind in Michigan, the PBC in ISM is designed for baccalaureate degree holders with a major in an area other than information systems who are seeking to enhance their job skills "re-tool" for a new career in this fast-growing, high-tech field.

"There is a push to make Detroit the technology hotspot in the country, and the market here is especially bright for technology professionals with this set of skills," said Toni Somers, interim chair of the school's Department of Management and Information Systems. "In fact, start-ups as well as global IT businesses are now locating in the area near Grand Circus Park, dubbed the Madison Block," Somers said.

Committed to providing students with the latest cutting-edge information technology while it's still cutting edge, the program will cover a specific set of hot topics, including data mining, database systems, web development, IT security and software. The certificate can be earned with as little as 24 credits, and the entire program can be completed in as little as two semesters.

According to Dice.com, a leading website for technology and engineering professionals, Detroit has more than 1,100 IT-related job postings on any given day, up from 800 in 2011. Additionally, the state's Bureau of Labor Market Information & Strategic Initiatives lists IT jobs on its "Michigan's Hot Jobs List," which are considered to be high-demand and high-wage careers through 2018.

"Detroit is part of Google's Tech Hub Network, a group of innovation centers in seven cities in North America that will receive financial and technical support from the Mountain View, California based company. With a commitment of this type, you can be assured that Detroit is now recognized as one of the seven hot IT places in the country," Somers said.
